The Story Behind “The Transformer”: How a Permitting Nightmare Created Our Most Clever Design
There is a unique magic to dreaming up your future log home. You can practically smell the fresh timber, picture the roaring fireplace, and imagine the quiet mornings looking out over your own piece of land.
But if you’ve ever tried to build that dream—especially in states like California—you know that the road to getting there can sometimes feel like a mountain of red tape.
In fact, it was a very specific, incredibly frustrating zoning law that inspired us to design The Transformer. Today, we want to take you behind the scenes of how this fan-favorite, 864-square-foot model came to be, and how it’s helping owner-builders beat the system with a warm smile.
The "Catch-22" of Buying Land
We hear it from passionate log home lovers all the time:
"I just bought a beautiful piece of land. I want to build a garage or a small workshop first so I have a place to store my tools, park my truck, and maybe stay the weekend while I save up and wait for permits to build my main dream home."
It sounds like a perfect, logical plan. But in many local jurisdictions, the county will look at your paperwork and say, "Denied."
In California and many other strict areas, you are legally not allowed to build a standalone garage without first submitting plans and securing a permit for a primary residence. They want the main house locked in first. For many families, this creates a financial and logistical bottleneck that stalls their dream before it even begins.
So, we decided to outsmart the system.
Enter: The Trojan Horse Garage
We asked ourselves: How can we give our clients the exact garage they need, while legally handing the county a blueprint for a primary residence?
We started with the ultimate foundation: a 24x24-foot footprint. Why? Because it is overwhelmingly the number-one, most popular garage size on the market. It’s the perfect size for two cars, a workshop, or all your outdoor gear.
Then, we worked our design magic:
-
The Glass Wall Illusion: In the massive structural opening where a garage door would eventually go, we placed a stunning, floor-to-ceiling glass wall. Instantly, the front of the building floods with natural light, giving you a beautiful, modern entry for a cozy cabin.
-
The Smart Build Bonus System: To maximize every single inch of that 24x24 footprint, we utilized our signature attic truss system (Smart Build Bonus System). This effortlessly unlocked a spacious 288-square-foot second floor without altering the building's footprint, creating a gorgeous attic loft that works perfectly as a second bedroom or a quiet studio. Below is a loft floor plan to get another bed and bath making this a 2 bedroom 2 bath design.

With a fully functioning kitchen, a warm great room, a main-floor bedroom, and two full baths, the county sees a permitted, 100% legal primary residence. You get to move onto your land, live comfortably, and take your time building your forever home.
Why We Call It "The Transformer"
The real genius of this plan happens years down the road when your primary log home is finally built and ready for move-in. Suddenly, you don't need this footprint to be your main house anymore.
This is when the building literally transforms back into its original intent.
Because we engineered this plan with future flexibility in mind, transforming it is a breeze:
-
You pop out the front glass wall and roll in a standard garage door.
-
You remove the kitchen cabinets and just two interior walls.
-
The Result: The main floor easily converts into a wide-open, spacious garage.
But here is the Bonus System magic—because of how we laid out the plumbing and stairs, the bathroom and the entire upstairs attic loft remain completely untouched.
Your primary residence has gracefully transformed into a fully functional 2-car garage with a private, cozy upstairs guest suite, home office, or caretaker’s quarters.
